New! Leonard Full Strap Diamond Point Spade

# A13D
In Stock
12 @ $ 100.99

Weight: 6.400000 lbs

Our classic tool with a contemporary redesign!

In 2011 A.M. Leonard brought back the full strap nursery spade - the tool the industry was built on. This spade has all of the features that made that full strap spade unique, but we added a diamond point head. This diamond shape allows you to dig, cut roots, and install edging with a lot less effort.

The Leonard full strap diamond point spade retains many of the features of our full strap nursery spade including:
  • Stronger D-grip and top strap connection - A single directional rivet holds top strap and metal D-grip, eliminating a side D-grip rivet from the previous model. Fewer holes and rivets at this connection improve the overall strength of the tool
  • Increased turn step size - Not so large that it interferes with the job, but a moderate increase in size that alleviates foot strain. This also allows the tool to accommodate a footpad - we recommend the Leonard foot pad AMFP
  • Increased bevel of cutting edge - No need to sharpen blade prior to use. We added the best angle to offer the sharpest cutting edge, while still maintaining durability
Made in the USA! Skilled local fabricators stamp and construct this tool using American steel.

A blast from the past

This review is actually about this spade's predecessor. My paternal grandparents purchased an A.M. Leonard B-1 Big Field Shovel to the best of my knowledge in either the late 1930s or 40s (my best guess but AMLeo would know actual production dates). I use it to this day. It is a great shovel and when I am on a job site, I have to keep tabs on it all the time. Everyone loves using it and appreciates its heritage and obvious durability. On my family shovel, there are five rivets holding the front and back straps solidly to the wooden handle. The current model has four rivets which appear to be located in roughly the same location as the top 4 rivets in my B-1 model. In mine, the bottom rivet is located just above the step. Between the top two rivets and running parallel to the shaft are the words, (line 1) "A.M.LEONARD & SON" (line 2) "PIQUA, O." followed further up the shaft by "B 1". About an inch above the 2d rivet from the bottom and perpendicular to the shaft, "B 1" is stamped into the strap. Between the bottom 2 rivets, again perpendicular to the shaft, is stamped, (line 1) "BIG FIELD" (line 2) "Shovel" Above the words, there appears to be a turkey gobbler. However, it may just be a fan of feathers. I am extraordinarily glad that AMLeo has reviewed this spade. I can assure that if it is half the original (and knowing AMLeo I feel certain it is more) you will find the purchase of this spade a superb value and potentially a family heirloom. TSEjr

    FAQ

QUESTION: What is the meaning of full strap?

ANSWER: The strap on the Leonard spades refers to a strap of metal which is placed along the front and back of the handle which adds to its strength. Full strap means the metal runs along the complete length of handle.
