Razor sharp and they have never needed sharpening with professional use. My complaint is that the handles have worn out on all three pairs I have purchased. The metal band that secures the wood to the blade breaks and the handles also develop play where the screws secure the handle causing me to hit my fingernails together which is annoying and painful. For this price a better handle design should be developed. Bumpers would relieve stress on the handles. Five stars if not for the weak handles.
This is a wonderful hedge shear and saves time cutting our yew hedges. We especially like the long handles and light weight of the Okatsumes. The blades keep their edge and stay sharp.
Absolutely fabulous shears. I am using them to prune my Boxwood Knot Garden - they are perfect to use for tight spaces - very sharp and effective.
There's nothing more frustrating than having to use a poor quality tool, and believe me, once you try one of the Japanese pruning tools, such as this Okatsune hedge shear, you will never be able to go back to those inexpensive pieces of crap. I know. For years I kept buying the latter, thinking I was saving money and getting by on the cheap. But once you feel the way these pruners go through shrub foliage you will wonder how you ever got by with anything else. Break down, spend more money, and get a REAL tool. These are big enough so that you can't easily lose them, so buy them, take good care of them, and consider them a lifetime investment.
