What hopper capacity should a commercial spreader have?
For commercial routes, look at 75 to 100 pound hoppers so a single fill covers a typical property without stopping. Smaller capacities mean more refill stops and more chances for spill and uneven application. Balance capacity against the pushing weight your crew can handle on slopes.
How do I calibrate a broadcast spreader?
Weigh a known amount of product, spread it over a measured test area at your normal walking pace, then weigh the remainder and calculate pounds per 1,000 square feet. Adjust the gate setting until output matches the bag's label rate. Recalibrate for each product, since granule size changes flow dramatically.
Can a broadcast spreader handle ice melt and sand?
Yes, spreaders with stainless or coated frames handle ice melt well, but rinse and dry the unit after every winter use because salt destroys untreated steel quickly. Dry sand spreads through heavy-duty units, though damp sand bridges in the hopper, so keep material dry.
How do I avoid striping and uneven coverage?
Overlap each pass so the edge of the spread pattern reaches the wheel tracks of the previous pass, and keep a constant walking speed, since pace directly changes the application rate. For fertilizer, splitting the rate in half and making two perpendicular passes gives the most uniform result.
Tow-behind or push broadcast spreader?
Properties measured in acres justify a tow-behind unit pulled by a mower or utility vehicle, which covers ground several times faster than walking. Push units remain better for gated yards, slopes, obstacle-heavy sites, and anywhere precision matters more than raw coverage speed.
