Deer clear low barriers easily, so effective fencing is typically 7.5 to 8 feet tall. Shorter fences only work in specific configurations like double-layer or angled designs that exploit a deer's reluctance to jump both high and wide. For straightforward exclusion of high-value plantings, height is the single most important factor.

Polypropylene mesh fencing is lightweight, nearly invisible at a distance, and fast to install on posts or trees, making it the landscape and garden standard. Metal fencing costs more and is more visible but withstands more abuse and lasts longer in high-pressure agricultural settings. Choose based on durability needs versus visibility and budget.

Deer netting mesh is sized to stop deer while resisting tearing; the openings are large enough to be unobtrusive but the material strong enough that deer cannot push through. Heavier-duty netting resists the stretching and breakage that happens when deer test a fence repeatedly, which is common in high-pressure areas.

Secure the bottom edge to the ground with stakes or ground anchors, because deer will push under any gap before they jump. Run the fence as a complete enclosure, since deer find and exploit any opening. Pay special attention to gates and corners, the most common failure points in an otherwise sound fence.

Tall deer mesh excludes deer but smaller animals can pass through or under larger mesh. For combined deer and small-animal pressure, add a finer-mesh lower section or a separate ground-level barrier.
