Head Protection FAQ

When is head protection required on a job site?

Hard hats are required wherever there is risk of falling objects, overhead hazards, or contact with fixed objects, which covers most tree work, construction, and many grounds tasks. The specific requirement depends on the work and applicable safety rules. When overhead or impact hazards exist, head protection is mandatory, not discretionary.

What is the difference between a hard hat and a safety helmet?

Traditional hard hats protect mainly against objects falling from above. Modern safety helmets, often with chin straps, add protection against side impacts and the falls that happen in active work like tree climbing. For arborists and crews facing more than overhead hazards, a helmet with a retention strap offers broader protection than a basic hard hat.

What are hard hat classes and types?

Head protection is rated by type and electrical class: type designations address top versus top-and-side impact, and electrical classes rate protection against electrical contact. The right rating depends on your hazards, especially whether electrical exposure is possible. Match the class to the work, since electrical-rated protection matters near power lines.

How often should a hard hat be replaced?

Replace head protection after any significant impact, even with no visible damage, since the protective capacity may be spent, and on a regular schedule because UV and weathering degrade the shell over time. A hard hat that has taken a hit or shows cracking, chalking, or brittleness should be retired. The suspension also wears and needs periodic replacement.

Can I attach face shields and hearing protection to a hard hat?

Many hard hats and helmets accept attachable face shields, visors, and earmuffs, building a complete protection system for tasks like trimming and chipping that threaten the head, face, and hearing at once. Confirm the accessories are compatible with the specific helmet. An integrated system is more convenient and more likely to be worn than separate pieces.

Can head protection be ordered for a whole crew?

Yes. Hard hats, helmets, and accessories are stocked in crew quantities with volume pricing by quote. Standardizing the crew on compatible head protection and accessories simplifies fitting replacement parts and ensures everyone has the protection their tasks require.
