Pumpkins and Gourds

We all know this: Pumpkins and gourds are the quintessential fall fruits. Gourds are perfect accents in a fall garden, coming in a wide variety colors, shapes, and sizes. Pumpkins can be hollowed out and carved, or gutted and made into a pie. At A.M. Leonard, we’ve got everything you need to make this the year you carve a jack-o-lantern you grew in your own backyard.

When should I plant my pumpkin/gourd seeds?

We recommend starting your pumpkin seed indoors 4 weeks before the last frost of spring. For gourds, you can do the same, but push it back to 6–8 weeks. When the threat of frost has safely passed, you can transplant your vine to the garden and plant in rows, keeping plants 6–12 inches apart and rows 6–10 feet apart.

How long do pumpkin/gourd seeds take to grow?

Depending on the variety, pumpkins require anywhere from 85 to 130 days to grow from seed. Gourds take even longer, around 180 days. If your growing season is short, you can jump start your crop by starting the seed indoors a few weeks before the last frost of spring.
