What is a pruner used for?

A pruner or hand pruning shear is used to cleanly cut and remove stems or branches from trees and plants. The cuts are usually ¾” or less since larger diameters are much more easily removed with a lopping shear. Common uses are 1) Removal of dead or damaged stems or branches to improve the health and aesthetics of the plant or tree, 2) Thin out trees and plants to allow additional air into the plant or trees, especially beneficial for fruiting trees to reduce disease and improve fruit growth. 3) Cutting back trees and ornamentals to maintain their size for their space in the landscape.

What are the two types of pruners?

The two basic types of hand pruning shears are either Bypass or Anvil, and selection should be based on the majority type of the material you are pruning. For general use, a bypass style is most common and excels at the proper cutting of properly cutting green (life) woods, but will also tackle cutting dead and hardwoods with more effort exerted. If most of your use is cutting dead and hardwood varieties, then an anvil blade pruner may be your best bet.
