A contemporary twist on a classic tool!

We make the blades of our Leonard Full-Strap Diamond-Point Spades using high-carbon, heat-treated steel. These blades measure 13 inches in length and have a top width of 7-1/2 inches. The blade tapers to a pointed 6-1/8-inch beveled cutting edge. The extra-wide turned step accommodates one of our Rubber Foot Pads.

Full-strap spades feature a strip of metal that runs along the entire length of the tool. We rivet this strap for a secure hold. We outfit this spade with a 27-inch D-grip handle. The D-grip increases leverage and provides you with maximum control. This handle features a shock-absorbing hardwood core with through rivets.

The low two-inch lift angle of Leonard Full-Strap Diamond-Point Spades makes them ideal for digging straight down. Use these tools to transplant, prune roots, edge, and much more. Their pointed cutting edge slices through dirt and roots with ease. The shock-absorbing core reduces stress and fatigue during use. The wide turn step alleviates foot strain but is not large enough to interfere with the job.

Leonard Full-Strap Diamond-Point Spades offer the perfect combination of strength, durability, and comfort. Their full-strap design reinforces critical stress points, further expanding their service life. We proudly manufacture these spades in the USA and back them with our lifetime warranty!

Do not use your spade as a pry bar. Doing so can damage this tool beyond repair. Any damage caused by improper use voids the warranty on this product.

The forever spade. Avid Gardener. from CO wrote October 30, 2018

This is clearly the only diamond point spade you will ever buy. It is made of heavy gauge steel that fully covers the handle. Get this and you will pass it on to your grandkids.

I've been wanting one of these A.M. Leonard Full Steel Strap Spades for many, many years, and I finally treated myself to the best. This tool is unbelievably stout. It is just the tool for collecting woody plants from the wild (if that happened to be legal...). I love the point at the tip of the blade and the blade has been beveled sharp. Aldo Leopold would approve.

Love the quality, but needs to be 12” to 15” longer. At 6’ 3” I’m too tall for the shovel.

A blast from the past T.S. Eschholz, Jr., C.C.S. Owner of Fitness Crafters from MD wrote May 03, 2017

This review is actually about this spade's predecessor. My paternal grandparents purchased an A.M. Leonard B-1 Big Field Shovel to the best of my knowledge in either the late 1930s or 40s (my best guess but AMLeo would know actual production dates). I use it to this day. It is a great shovel and when I am on a job site, I have to keep tabs on it all the time. Everyone loves using it and appreciates its heritage and obvious durability. On my family shovel, there are five rivets holding the front and back straps solidly to the wooden handle. The current model has four rivets which appear to be located in roughly the same location as the top 4 rivets in my B-1 model. In mine, the bottom rivet is located just above the step. Between the top two rivets and running parallel to the shaft are the words, (line 1) "A.M.LEONARD & SON" (line 2) "PIQUA, O." followed further up the shaft by "B 1". About an inch above the 2d rivet from the bottom and perpendicular to the shaft, "B 1" is stamped into the strap. Between the bottom 2 rivets, again perpendicular to the shaft, is stamped, (line 1) "BIG FIELD" (line 2) "Shovel" Above the words, there appears to be a turkey gobbler. However, it may just be a fan of feathers. I am extraordinarily glad that AMLeo has reviewed this spade. I can assure that if it is half the original (and knowing AMLeo I feel certain it is more) you will find the purchase of this spade a superb value and potentially a family heirloom. TSEjr
