How to Choose a Wheelbarrow: Capacity, Tray, Tire, and Wheel

Wheelbarrow capacity is measured in cubic feet, but the number that actually limits you is the weight rating. Fill a 6 cu ft tray with wet soil or gravel and you'll hit 500 pounds before the tray looks half full. Fill the same tray with mulch and you'll push it all day. Start with what you're hauling.

Four things determine the right fit: capacity, tray material, tire type, and wheel configuration.

Capacity: Match the Tray to the Job

Cubic feet tells you how much volume the tray holds. Weight capacity tells you how much it can actually carry. For dense materials, the weight limit is what matters first.

6 cu ft is the workhorse size for most day-to-day work. It clears standard gates, fits in truck beds, and stays controllable on slopes with a full load. For mulch, soil, plantings, and general cleanup, it handles the job.

7 cu ft is a mid-size option available in select non-Leonard models in AML's catalog. A good fit if 6 cu ft feels limiting but you don't need the full jump to 8.

8 cu ft carries more per trip on open properties. Ideal for high-volume mulch runs and seasonal cleanup where you have room to move. The tray adds length over the 6 cu ft, so measure your gate widths first.

10 cu ft is the max-volume option and only comes in a two-wheel configuration. Best for bulk mulch and loose material on open ground. Rated to 750 pounds, it handles heavier loads than the 6 and 8 cu ft models. These ship motor freight.

Tray Material: Poly vs. Steel

Poly is the right call for most landscape work. It won't rust, cleans out quickly, and doesn't hold onto wet material. For mulch, soil, compost, fertilizer, and general landscape debris, poly is the low-maintenance choice.

Steel is worth it when you're regularly moving sharp or abrasive material: broken concrete, flagstone, river rock, demolition debris. Steel resists gouging better than poly under that kind of load. You give up some weight and need to rinse it after wet jobs, but it outlasts poly when the material is rough.

Most people run poly. If your work involves frequent hardscape or demo material, a steel tray pays for itself over time.

Tire Type: Flat-Free, Pneumatic, or Narrow Diamond-Tread

Pneumatic tires are air-filled. They absorb shock better on rough terrain and roll more easily over uneven ground. But they can puncture. On sites with debris, nails, or thorns, a flat tire mid-job is a real risk.

Flat-free tires are solid foam-fill. No inflation, no punctures, no stopping mid-job. For regular route work, flat-free is the obvious call. They're a bit heavier and have slightly more rolling resistance on hard surfaces, but that's not a real trade-off for most operations.

Narrow diamond-tread tires are flat-free with a narrower footprint. Lighter, easier to pivot, and better on paved or concrete surfaces. A good option when you're working on finished hardscape or threading through tight gates regularly.

Wheel Configuration: Single vs. Two-Wheel

Most Leonard wheelbarrows run on a single wheel. Single-wheel handles tight turns and threads through narrow paths. For most maintenance and installation work, it's the right choice.

Two-wheel models are a lot more stable under heavy loads and on slopes. They won't tip as easily when fully loaded. That matters on hillside sites or when you've got a newer person on the barrow. Two-wheel is only available on the 10 cu ft models.

Handles: Hardwood or Steel

Standard Leonard wheelbarrows come with hardwood handles: 5-foot, tapered from 2 inches to 1-5/8 inches. Thick enough to grip well in gloves and easy to replace when they wear out.

Steel handles (available on several Leonard configurations) are 18-gauge galvanized tubing with injection-molded grips. Heavier, but they won't warp or crack if the barrow lives outside year-round.


Replacement Parts

Leonard wheelbarrows carry a lifetime warranty and every wear part is individually replaceable. Keeping a replacement tire and wheel on hand means a worn-out tire doesn't sideline a barrow. Replacement hardwood handles fit all 6, 8, and 10 cu ft models and drop in with pre-drilled holes. A nose brace is a cheap fix that fits every Leonard model.

If the frame and tray are solid, worn handles or a cracked nose brace don't mean the wheelbarrow is done.


When a Cart Makes More Sense

A wheelbarrow isn't always the right tool.
