These are high quality spades, i have the drain spade. It practically digs itself. It'd be nice to see a picture of the blade/edge of the shovel so folks know what kind of spade they're getting.

Great cutting spade and lever on wrote

Great edge for cutting thick roots. The long handle is also great for levering and popping small stumps and rocks.

Terrific spade... on wrote

"Holy mackerel" was my reaction to seeing this super-duty all steel shovel for the first time. Already owning a dozen shovels and with my wife's hobby of yard landscaping, I didn't expect to be wowed. But, I had no idea anyone made a shovel of this strength. The blade is just over 12 gauge (.112") thick, which is as strong as you'll find anywhere. The welds are perfect and it would inconceivable that we could bend or break this thing even if we tried. The handle shaft is slightly oval to prevent any bending, not that it would. The only possible negative is that it's about 50% heavier than a standard thin-blade/wood handled shovel -- but my average sized wife has no trouble using it and likes the weight of it for edging and other work. Yeah; it's expensive -- but this has to be the best shovel ever made.

Serious shovel on wrote

I got this shovel mostly for transplanting trees shrubs and perennials. Now this is the shovel I reach for when the diggin gets tough. This powers through roots like a boss and cuts through heavy mountain clay like buttah. I still prefer a lighter wooden handle shovel for everyday digging, but when you need it, this spade is a life saver. I just got done digging a French drain and it was great for smoothing the sides and bottom of the trench and the narrower blade made it easier to work in a deep narrow trench. This spade will last forever! I look forward to transplanting some shrubs without mutilating any roots or breaking any wooden handles.

Too Heavy on wrote

While the design may be versitile and good for edging, the weight of this shovel is far too heavy ... I simply cannot use it even though I workout at the gym and have considerable strength for a women. I would opt to send it back if it were not for the cost of return shipping.

Amazing! on wrote

Bought this for my boyfriend as a birthday present because A.M. Leonard is the only brand he wanted and I couldn't understand why. After seeing the finished product I won't question it again... he loves it and I'm thrilled! Great job!

The best spade I own, on wrote

I have wwoofers working on my farm and though wonderful they are tough on equipment. Every year someone would break the handle on a spade. A good deep strong spade is critical in a garden environment. I searched for a spade that was made with one piece of steel and here it is - to my mind the perfect tool. Keep it clean. Keep it sharp. I have two now and will buy another next summer, As a shallow aside i love the red handle - easy to see over the weeds!!

Landscape shovel on wrote

I wanted an unbreakable shovel with a handle that would last. Found it in this one. I knew it was tough when I picked it up and dug my first hole. Over the years I find I get enjoyment in quality long lasting items even if they cost more originally.

good strength, my crews use the spades for everything including moving boulders, prying up concrete, cutting large roots, etc. They hold up well and are not too heavy when edging beds all day.

A.M.L. Nursery Spade on wrote

I purchased this as an alternative to the 15" wide model because it is slightly longer and I thought the more narrow blade would make it handier in tight spots. After using both alternatively, I have to say I prefer the 15". That being said, one of these spades is with me at all times. They are the most versatile tool in my arsenal because they are just so ... tough. I never leave home without it. These spades are expensive.... and worth every penny.

I always used for decades the higher priced name brand steel spade. AM leonards spade stands up to everything I had the other one do with less edge were. Outstanding!

I remember when these first came out on wrote

I remember when these first came out and the price was much less. We still have all but one of the original one purchased. They hold a sharp edge. If one person can destroy this spade then you do not want to mess with that person.

This line of spades is the best in my experience. Very strong, easy to handle. virtually indestructable and at a great price.

probably the best style on wrote

since the full strap classic spade that am leonard just reissued has that thin crappy handle that will bend brake when you are prying on it, this is probably the better spade they offer
