When should I choose trunk injection over a soil drench or foliar spray?
Choose trunk injection when soil treatments are impractical or off-target risk is high: near water, on paved sites, in mulched beds shared with shrubs, or when the pest sits high in the canopy. Soil drenches are slower to translocate, and foliar sprays carry drift risk that injection eliminates entirely.
What time of year is best for tree injections?
Inject during active sap flow, typically mid-spring through early fall when trees are fully leafed out and transpiring. Uptake slows dramatically in drought-stressed or dormant trees. Water the root zone a day before injecting if conditions are dry to speed uptake and reduce time on each tree.
What equipment do I need to start a trunk injection program?
A basic program needs an injection system matched to your product line, a drill with sharp bits sized to the system's plugs or tees, and the labeled product. Climbing gear is not required since all work happens at the trunk base, which is part of why injection scales well for plant health care routes.
How do I decide how much product each tree needs?
Dosing is based on trunk diameter at breast height (DBH). Measure each trunk, then follow the product label's rate per inch of DBH. Multi-stem trees are dosed per stem. Accurate measurement matters because underdosing produces poor control and overdosing wastes expensive product.
How long does a systemic treatment protect a tree?
It depends on the active ingredient and target pest. Some systemic insecticide injections protect for one season, while others provide two years or more of control against borers. Build retreatment intervals into client contracts based on the label, not on visual symptoms, since damage often appears after protection lapses.
Can injection equipment be used on any tree species?
Most systems work across hardwoods and conifers, but uptake speed varies widely by species, ring porosity, and tree health. Severely declined trees with compromised vascular systems take up product poorly. Assess canopy condition first, because injection is a protection and early-intervention tool rather than a rescue for nearly dead trees.
