Organic Fertilizer FAQ

What is the difference between organic and synthetic fertilizer?

Organic fertilizers come from natural plant, animal, and mineral sources and release nutrients slowly as soil organisms break them down, also feeding soil biology. Synthetic fertilizers deliver nutrients in immediately available form for fast response. Organic feeds the soil and releases gradually; synthetic feeds the plant directly and quickly. Many programs use both for different purposes.

How quickly do organic fertilizers work?

Organic fertilizers generally release nutrients gradually as microbes break them down, so they act more slowly than synthetics but feed steadily over a longer period with less burn risk. This makes them well-suited to building long-term soil health and providing sustained feeding, though they are not the choice when a plant needs a fast nutrient correction.

Do organic fertilizers improve soil health?

Yes. Beyond supplying nutrients, organic fertilizers add organic matter and feed the soil microorganisms that drive nutrient cycling and soil structure. Over time this improves the soil's ability to hold water and nutrients. This soil-building benefit is a key reason growers choose organic inputs, since healthy soil supports healthier plants with less external input.

When should I use organic fertilizer?

Organic fertilizer suits situations favoring steady feeding and soil building: established plantings, soil improvement programs, and operations marketing organic or sustainable practices. Because it releases slowly, apply it ahead of the period when plants need the nutrients. For long-term soil health and gradual feeding, organic inputs are well-matched; for quick correction, synthetics respond faster.

Can organic fertilizers burn plants like synthetics can?

Organic fertilizers generally carry lower burn risk than concentrated synthetics because they release nutrients slowly, but they are not entirely burn-proof, and some concentrated organic products can still harm plants if over-applied. Follow the label rate regardless of type. The slower release makes organics more forgiving, but proper application still matters.

Can organic fertilizers be ordered in bulk?

Yes. Organic fertilizers are stocked in bulk and commercial quantities with volume pricing by quote. Operations running feeding and soil-building programs across many properties or large growing areas benefit from ordering in volume ahead of the season for consistent product and pricing.
