Film thickness is measured in mils, and heavier film resists wind, snow, and tearing for more seasons. Standard greenhouse film is commonly a few mils thick and rated for multiple years of use. Choose thickness based on your climate's wind and snow load and how long you want the covering to last before replacement.

Single-layer film is simplest and lowest cost. Double-layer film, inflated with a small blower to create an air gap, dramatically improves insulation and reduces heating costs in cold climates. The air gap is the key: it cuts heat loss substantially. For year-round or cold-season growing, double poly usually pays back in energy savings.

Quality UV-stabilized greenhouse film typically lasts several years before UV exposure degrades it and it must be replaced. Film without UV stabilization breaks down much faster. Plan replacement into your operating cycle, and inspect for thinning and tears, since a film that fails mid-season exposes the crop to weather.

UV stabilization protects the film from the sun's degrading effect, which is what otherwise makes plastic turn brittle, yellow, and tear within a season. Order film wide enough to cover the structure with overhang to secure at the base, minimizing seams since every seam is a potential leak and weak point. Measure the structure's width plus both sides plus anchoring allowance. Ordering the correct width as a single piece is far better than seaming narrower film together.
