What is the difference between a tiller and a cultivator?

A tiller breaks new ground and turns soil deeply for bed preparation, with the power to dig into compacted or unworked ground. A cultivator works existing loose soil more shallowly, mixing amendments and controlling weeds between plantings. Tillers prepare; cultivators maintain. Match the machine to whether you are breaking new ground or working already-cultivated soil.

What is the difference between front-tine and rear-tine tillers?

Front-tine tillers are lighter and maneuverable, suiting smaller areas and already-worked soil. Rear-tine tillers are more powerful, with the weight and driven wheels to break tough, compacted, or new ground efficiently. For breaking new beds and hard soil, rear-tine units do the heavy work; front-tine suits lighter cultivating and smaller spaces. The soil and area determine which fits.

How deep should I till?

Till deep enough to loosen the root zone for the crop, typically several inches for bed preparation, without going so deep that you disturb subsoil structure unnecessarily. The right depth depends on the planting. Tilling to loosen where roots will grow prepares the bed, while excessive or repeated deep tilling can harm soil structure, so match the depth to the actual need.

Can tilling harm the soil?

Excessive tilling can damage soil structure, disrupt soil biology, and bring buried weed seeds to the surface, so till purposefully for bed preparation rather than as routine maintenance. Used appropriately for breaking and preparing ground, tilling is valuable. The caution is against over-tilling, which degrades the soil structure that healthy plants depend on, so till when there is a clear reason.

When is the best time to till?

Till when the soil is moist but not wet: working wet soil compacts and clods it, while bone-dry hard ground resists the tines. The right moisture lets the tiller break and turn soil cleanly. Tilling at proper moisture, typically a day or two after rain or irrigation, produces a good seedbed, while tilling wet soil damages structure and creates clods.
