Bird Repellent FAQ

What type of bird control works best for crops and nursery stock?

Exclusion netting is the most reliable method for protecting fruit, berries, and seedlings, because it physically blocks access rather than relying on birds learning to avoid the area. Visual and auditory deterrents work best as supplements or in situations where netting is impractical.

What mesh size should bird netting have?

Use 3/4 inch mesh or smaller to exclude small birds like sparrows and finches; larger mesh stops only bigger species and lets small birds through to feed. Smaller mesh also reduces the chance of birds tangling in the net, which matters for both ethics and labor.

How do I install netting without damaging plants?

Suspend the net on a frame, hoops, or stakes so it stands clear of the foliage. Netting draped directly on plants lets birds feed right through it and abrades growing tips in wind. Secure the bottom edge to the ground or frame, since birds quickly find any gap.

Do visual deterrents like flash tape actually work?

They work short-term and as part of a rotation. Birds habituate to any static deterrent within days to weeks, so move flash tape, predator effigies, and similar devices regularly and combine methods. For high-value crops, treat visual deterrents as a supplement to netting, not a substitute.

How long does bird netting last?

UV-stabilized netting typically lasts several seasons when taken down and stored out of the sun in the off-season. Leaving net deployed year-round shortens its life and risks snow loading damage. Inspect for tears at the start of each season, since birds exploit even small openings.

When should bird protection go up?

Install netting before fruit begins to color or seedlings emerge, because birds establish feeding patterns quickly and a flock that has already found the crop is much harder to displace. Protection installed early in the vulnerability window is the difference between minor and total loss on small fruit.
