What is the difference between contact and area deer repellents?
Contact repellents are applied to plants and work by taste, deterring deer when they bite. Area repellents use scent to keep deer away from a zone before they reach the plants. Contact types generally protect specific plants more reliably; area types cover broader spaces but weather faster. Many programs use both.
How often should deer repellent be reapplied?
Reapply after rain and as plants put on new growth, since new foliage is unprotected and rain washes away many formulas. Follow the label, which usually specifies an interval of a few weeks during active growth. The most common cause of repellent failure is letting the schedule slip, not the product itself.
Can deer repellent be used on edible plants?
Some can and some cannot, so read the label before applying to vegetables, fruit, or herbs. Products cleared for edibles will state it and specify any pre-harvest interval. Never assume a repellent is food-safe; the label is the binding instruction and using an unapproved product on edibles is a real safety issue.
Do I need to rotate deer repellents?
Yes. Deer habituate to a repellent's scent or taste over time, so rotating between products with different active ingredients keeps them effective through the season. Relying on one product all year invites deer to learn it is harmless. Rotation is standard practice in any serious browse-protection program.
When is deer browsing pressure highest?
Pressure peaks in late winter and early spring when natural food is scarce and again when does are feeding fawns. Newly installed landscape plants and tender spring growth are prime targets. Apply repellent proactively ahead of these windows rather than reacting after deer have already found and browsed the plants.
Will repellent alone protect a high-value planting?
For truly high-value plantings under heavy pressure, repellent alone is rarely enough. Pair it with physical exclusion like deer fencing or individual plant protection. Repellent is excellent for reducing browse across a property and protecting ornamentals, but critical crops and specimen plants warrant a physical barrier as the primary defense.
