Using the wrong type, or skipping the mix on a 2-stroke, damages the engine quickly.

Bar and chain oil is formulated to be tacky so it clings to a moving chainsaw chain and bar rather than flinging off, providing lubrication under high speed and friction. Substituting regular motor oil is not recommended, since it lacks the tackifiers and flings off, leaving the bar and chain under-lubricated and wearing prematurely.

Follow the equipment manufacturer ratio, commonly expressed as a fuel-to-oil ratio like 50:1, measuring the oil accurately into the fuel. Too little oil causes the engine to seize; too much fouls plugs and smokes. Using the specified ratio and a quality 2-cycle oil is essential, since the mix is the only lubrication a 2-stroke engine gets.

Store in sealed original containers, away from heat and ignition sources, and keep them out of reach of children and animals. Label any mixed fuel with the date, since 2-cycle mix degrades over time and old mix causes starting and running problems. Proper storage keeps products effective and the work area safe.
