Why do Silky saws cut faster than other hand saws?
Two reasons. First, the blades are taper-ground, meaning the blade body is thinner behind the teeth, so there is less friction and the saw does not bind in green wood. Second, the teeth are impulse-hardened at the tips only, which makes them harder than the blade body and resistant to dulling. The tradeoff is that impulse-hardened teeth cannot be resharpened with a file.
